4 Unexpected Plumbing Emergencies That Can't Wait

Plumbing emergencies can happen at any time. And while some issues are easy to fix, some require a lot more effort. Things can get messy if you decide to take on repairs without any plumbing experience. Call in your plumber if you're not sure how to handle a plumbing emergency.

Below are four plumbing emergencies that you shouldn't ignore once you notice them.

1. Burst Pipes
A busted pipe is among the most common plumbing emergencies that can catch you by surprise. Most water pipes are designed to withstand harsh conditions. If any of your pipes burst, this might be a result of longterm strain from many factors.

For instance, excessive water pressure can gradually strain your pipes and make them burst. Interestingly, most water pipes have a pressure limit. If this limit is exceeded, the pipe structure may not withstand the excessive force from high water pressure. Eventually, the pipes may burst and cause unexpected leaks.

In addition, pipes may burst due to old age. Prolonged exposure to external elements (such as temperature variations) can weaken the pipe structure. And that's why most pipes have a limited lifespan.

You may have to replace your pipes if they're too old before you have to deal with burst pipes. Your plumber may also install a pressure regulator to guard pipes against high water pressure.

2. Water Heater Failure
Your hot water heater can fail, especially if you don't notice the various signs of trouble on time. And while most parts of your water heater are fixable, the average homeowner may fail to identify exactly where a problem is.

For instance, if the water in your home isn't hot enough, you may think to check the thermostat. However, a faulty heating element might be the actual cause. A misdiagnosis can create more problems that weren't even there before if you handle repairs as a DIY project.

Similarly, you may notice that your home only has hot water for a few hours each day if you have a failing water heater. However, a smaller-sized tank can also be a likely cause. If the hot water demand is too high, a smaller tank may not be enough to fit your usage habits.

Depending on what type of problem you notice, your plumber may either suggest a system repair or replacement.

3. Clogged Toilets
Toilet clogs can cause your toilet bowl to overflow with wastewater. Normally, a simple blockage can be a mixture of human waste and toilet paper. You can easily get rid of such clogs with a plunger.

However, tougher blockages may need you to call an experienced plumber. Such clogs may stem from the drain line or septic system.

Not only can overflowing toilets cause structural damage to your home, but they can also be a constant health hazard for you and your family. Always act quickly if you notice any slow-draining toilets before they overflow with waste.

4. Low Water Pressure
Sometimes, solving low water pressure can be as simple as turning on the main shutoff valve. The valve may not be completely open to allow for smooth water flow. However, low water pressure can also be a sign of much more serious problems with your plumbing system.

For example, if a huge leak is somewhere in your plumbing system, most of the water may not reach your faucets or shower. Similarly, minerals and debris may accumulate inside your plumbing system and restrict normal water flow. A failing pressure regulator might also trigger low water pressure across all your fixtures.

You may have to call in your plumber for a thorough inspection, during which they could uncover any of these problems.

Do not put off any of these plumbing issues. They can only get worse over time and cost you a lot of money in repairs. If you have any plumbing emergency at your home or business, feel free to contact us at Power Plumbing Inc. today.
